The original tape recordings were made in 1955, the last year North Western operated steam locomotives in thru-service on the system’s Wisconsin Division & Madison District. Offered on CD.
The locale is Baraboo and Devils Lake State Park, Wisconsin on the main line between Chicago and Minneapolis. The more than four miles of heavy grades between Baraboo and Devils Nose, and the narrow passage between towering 600-foot high quartzite bluffs, where whistle signals have pronounced resounding echoes, makes this territory suited for such recordings.
